Brazil Nuts: What Makes Them Different and How Much to Eat
Share
Brazil nuts aren't grown in Kashmir — they come from the Amazon basin — but they've earned a place in our dry fruit range because of one specific trait: they're one of the most concentrated natural sources of selenium available in any common food.
What Makes Brazil Nuts Notable
Selenium is an essential mineral that's genuinely difficult to get in meaningful amounts from most everyday foods. Brazil nuts are a well-known exception — a small handful can provide a substantial amount, more than most other nuts by a wide margin.
Why That Means Portion Size Matters
Because Brazil nuts are so concentrated in selenium, they're also one of the few nuts where eating a large quantity regularly isn't automatically better — too much selenium over time isn't beneficial, unlike most nutrients where "more" is rarely a practical concern from food alone. A small daily handful (2–3 nuts is a commonly cited amount) is generally considered plenty; this isn't medical advice, just a widely cited general guideline, and anyone with specific health concerns should check with a doctor.
Flavour and Texture
Brazil nuts have a soft, buttery texture and a mild, slightly sweet flavour — less assertive than walnuts or almonds, closer in richness to a macadamia. Their size (notably larger than most common nuts) also makes them satisfying in smaller quantities.
How to Use Them
Brazil nuts work well eaten plain, chopped and added to trail mixes or baked goods, or grated finely over desserts for a mild, buttery finish. Their soft texture means they blend easily into recipes without needing much preparation.
Storage
Like most nuts, Brazil nuts have a notable oil content and can turn rancid if stored poorly. Keep in an airtight container, ideally refrigerated, for the longest freshness.
A Small But Useful Addition
Brazil nuts aren't a Kashmiri product, but they round out a well-stocked pantry in a way few other nuts do, given how hard selenium is to source elsewhere in the diet. See our Brazil Nuts (Raw, Natural) — best enjoyed in moderate, consistent amounts rather than large quantities at once.
