Kashmiri Kehwa vs Masala Chai: What's Actually Different
Share
Kehwa and masala chai both get called "spiced tea," which makes them sound more similar than they actually are. Once you set them side by side, the differences — in base, preparation, and even purpose — are pretty clear.
The Base Tea Is Different
Masala chai is built on black tea, typically simmered directly in milk (or a milk-water mix) along with its spices. Kehwa uses green tea instead, steeped in water — no milk at all in the traditional version. This single difference changes the whole character of the drink before you even get to the spices.
Milk vs No Milk
This is the most immediately noticeable difference: masala chai is a milk tea by definition, rich and creamy. Kehwa is traditionally served without milk, which makes it lighter and lets the saffron and green tea flavours come through more clearly rather than being muted by dairy.
The Spice Profiles Differ Too
Masala chai typically leans on a broader spice mix — ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, sometimes black pepper — for a bolder, warming flavour. Kehwa's spicing is more restrained: cardamom and cinnamon alongside saffron, with almonds for richness instead of milk. Saffron isn't a standard part of masala chai at all — it's central to kehwa.
Where Each Comes From
Masala chai has roots across the Indian subcontinent broadly and varies enormously by region and household. Kehwa is specifically Kashmiri, tied closely to the region's saffron and almond production and to a distinct hospitality tradition — it's less of a daily habit drink and more tied to guests, gatherings, and specific occasions.
Which Should You Make?
- Want something rich and warming, milk-based: Masala chai.
- Want something lighter, saffron-forward, dairy-free: Kehwa.
- Serving guests in a traditional Kashmiri context: Kehwa is the expected choice.
- After a heavy meal: Kehwa's lightness is traditionally considered easier on digestion than a rich milk tea.
Try Both, for Different Moods
They're not competitors so much as different tools for different moments — masala chai for a rich, everyday warming drink, kehwa for something lighter and more occasion-specific. Our Kashmiri Shahi Kehwa blend makes it easy to try the real thing without measuring out individual spices yourself.
