Kashmiri Papier-Mâché: A Craft Tradition Beyond Textiles

Papier-mâché rarely comes up alongside saffron and shawls when people talk about Kashmiri craft, but it's every bit as rooted in the same tradition of patient, hand-worked detail — just applied to paper pulp instead of fabric or fields.

What Kashmiri Papier-Mâché Actually Is

The craft involves layering paper pulp over a mould to build a solid base object — boxes, ornaments, vases — which is then hand-painted in intricate floral and paisley motifs, often finished with a fine gold outline, before a protective lacquer coat is applied.

A Two-Stage Craft

Papier-mâché work is typically split between two specialised roles: one artisan builds and shapes the base object (called sakhtsazi), while another handles the detailed painting (naqashi). It's common for these to be entirely separate skills, passed down and practiced by different specialists rather than one person doing both.

Shared Design Language

The same floral and paisley patterns that show up in papier-mâché painting echo directly in Kashmiri embroidery work, including the Ari-work motifs on our pherans — a shared visual vocabulary across otherwise very different craft mediums.

A Craft Under Pressure

Like hand embroidery, papier-mâché faces competition from cheaper, faster machine-printed alternatives that mimic the look without the hand-painted detail or durability of genuine work — the same broader pattern affecting most of Kashmir's hand-made craft traditions.

Why It's Worth Knowing About

Even though we don't currently carry papier-mâché pieces ourselves, understanding this craft adds useful context to the broader picture of Kashmiri handwork — the same patience, shared motifs, and generational skill-passing that defines our embroidered textiles shows up here too, just in an entirely different material.

One Craft Among Several

Saffron, embroidery, and papier-mâché are three very different outputs, but they share the same underlying thread: skilled, patient, hand-done work that doesn't scale easily, and that's part of what makes each of them genuinely valuable rather than simply expensive.
