Kashmiri Pheran Fabric Guide: What We Use and Why

Every one of our designer pherans is built on the same base: a substantial cotton fabric chosen specifically to carry heavy hand embroidery without sagging or distorting over time. Here's why that fabric choice matters as much as the embroidery itself.

Why Fabric Weight Matters for Embroidery

Ari-work embroidery, done front and back, adds real weight and density to a garment. A lightweight or loosely woven fabric would sag, pucker, or distort under that much stitching over time. Our pherans use a sturdier cotton weave specifically because it can support dense embroidery without losing its shape.

Cotton's Role Beyond Structure

Beyond just holding the embroidery well, cotton is breathable and comfortable for extended wear — relevant since a pheran, once put on, tends to be worn for hours at a stretch during an event or gathering. A stiffer, less breathable fabric would undercut the comfort a loose-fitting garment is supposed to provide in the first place.

How It Differs From Traditional Winter Pherans

Historically, pherans built purely for winter warmth often used wool or wool blends, prioritising insulation over anything else. Our designer pherans, built more for fashion and versatility across seasons, use cotton as a base specifically because it works better across a wider temperature range — layer it for cooler weather, wear it alone when it's mild.

Colourfastness and Embroidery Longevity

The cotton base is also chosen for how well it holds dye and thread over repeated wear and cleaning — a poor-quality base fabric can cause embroidery threads to pull or colours to bleed over time, which is part of why fabric selection isn't a decision made purely on cost.

Caring for the Fabric

Dry cleaning is recommended over home washing to protect both the fabric's finish and the embroidery. Store folded rather than hung for extended periods, and keep away from prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade both dye and embroidery thread over time.
