Vegan Kehwa: A Dairy-Free Take on the Classic Recipe
Share
Traditional kehwa isn't dairy-heavy to begin with — it's naturally brewed in water, not milk — which makes it one of the easier traditional drinks to adapt for a fully plant-based kitchen without losing what makes it distinct.
Why Kehwa Is Already Mostly Vegan
Unlike masala chai, which is built on simmering tea directly in milk, kehwa's base is water, not dairy. The traditional recipe only introduces a dairy-adjacent element through the almond garnish on top — and almonds themselves are already plant-based, so there's less to actually change than you'd expect.
The One Ingredient Worth Checking
The only place dairy sometimes sneaks into kehwa is if honey is used as a sweetener and you're avoiding animal products entirely, or if a recipe variation adds a splash of milk at the end (a regional variation some households use). For a fully vegan version, swap honey for a plant-based sweetener like date syrup or maple syrup, and skip any milk addition.
Vegan Kehwa Recipe
- Bring 2 cups of water to a boil, then let it sit off heat for 30 seconds.
- Add 2 teaspoons green tea leaves, 2 crushed cardamom pods, and a small cinnamon stick. Steep for 3–4 minutes.
- Add 3–4 strands of saffron in the last minute of steeping.
- Strain into cups, top with slivered almonds, and sweeten with date syrup, maple syrup, or plain sugar to taste.
Using a Pre-Mixed Blend
Our Kashmiri Shahi Kehwa blend is naturally plant-based as-is — just steep in hot water and strain, then sweeten with your sweetener of choice rather than the traditional honey if you're keeping the drink fully vegan.
Don't Skip the Almonds
It might be tempting to leave out the almond garnish to simplify things, but they genuinely add to the flavour and richness of the drink — they're already plant-based, so there's no reason to cut them for a vegan version.
A Naturally Adaptable Drink
Kehwa's water-based tradition means it was never far from vegan to begin with — a couple of small swaps, and you've got the same saffron-and-spice character without any animal products involved.
