Kashmiri Dry Fruits Buying Guide: Almonds, Walnuts, Pine Nuts & Pistachios
Share
Kashmir's dry fruit range goes well beyond a single "almonds" or "walnuts" listing — there are real differences between varieties, and knowing them makes it much easier to pick the right one for snacking, gifting, or cooking. Here's a straightforward breakdown of the nuts we carry and how they differ.
Almonds: Mamra vs Badam Giri vs Paper-Shell
Not all almonds are the same almond. Mamra almonds are the premium, wrinkled, oil-rich variety prized for their intense flavour and firmness — see our Kashmiri Mamra Almond Kernels. Badam giri is Kashmir's everyday almond — smoother, milder, and more affordable, better suited to daily snacking or baking; see Kashmiri Badam Giri. And paper-shell almonds get their name from a shell so thin it can often be cracked by hand, sold in-shell for those who enjoy that ritual — see Paper-Shell Almonds.
Walnuts: Shelled vs Whole
Our Kashmiri Walnut Kernels come ready to eat, sourced from the same orchards as our Whole Walnuts (In Shell), for anyone who prefers cracking their own. Kashmiri walnuts are known for a lighter colour and milder bitterness compared to many commercially farmed varieties.
Chilgoza: Kashmir's Pine Nut
Chilgoza grows inside the cones of the chir pine tree across the Himalayan belt, including parts of Kashmir and Ladakh. It's naturally labour-intensive to harvest, which is part of why it commands a higher price than most nuts. We carry it two ways: with shell for the full ritual, or roasted and shelled for straight-from-the-pack snacking.
Pistachios and Cashews
Our natural, unshelled pistachios come with no added salt, the traditional way to eat them, while the roasted and salted version is built for snacking. On the cashew side, our W180-grade plain cashews are the largest, most uniform whole-kernel grade available, and the roasted and salted cashews offer a buttery, savoury finish for anyone who wants something ready to eat.
Picking What's Right for You
As a rough rule: reach for mamra almonds and pistachios-in-shell for gifting or special occasions, badam giri and roasted cashews for daily snacking, and chilgoza or paper-shell almonds when you want something a little different on the table.
